Main Purpose of the Role
he Modern Apprenticeship is a three-to-four-year programme delivered in partnership between the apprentice, Aquascot, and the training provider (college). The programme comprises: SVQ Level 2, SVQ Level 3, and a National Certificate in Engineering Practice.
- The Level 2 and National Certificate components are delivered full-time at college in the first year.
- Level 3 is delivered in the workplace, supported by visits from college assessors.
Under supervision, the apprentice will:
- Safely deliver cost-effective maintenance and repair activities to all Aquascot assets, in line with the annual maintenance plan and operational demands.
- Pro-actively seek and implement improvements to enhance asset reliability and operational efficiency.
- Support the Site Management Teams in the operation of a food processing environment, working within the SQPDC framework (Safety, Quality, People, Delivery & Cost) and contributing to Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
- Undertake training to become competent in a range of tasks across both manufacturing sites.
- Learn and follow the safe and efficient operation of production processes and equipment, producing high- quality products that meet customer specifications.
- Uphold the highest standards of quality and customer care, promoting and demonstrating Aquascot values in all work activities, through professional behaviour, teamwork, and personal accountability.

Key Responsibilities:
Health & Safety and Food Safety
- Adhere to all relevant Health and Safety procedures.
- Follow all quality, food safety and hygiene procedures, keeping your work environment safe, clean, and tidy.
- Take responsibility for minimising risks, including cross-contamination, and maintain standards that protect both product and colleagues.
- Understand product labelling standards, including allergen control, batch information and product traceability.
- Comply with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements relating to Health & Safety, food safety, and environmental standards, in line with company procedures.
- Follow environmental procedures to minimise impact and report any issues to your manager.
- Wear protective clothing and personal protective equipment (PPE) as provided, in line with health, safety, and food safety requirements.
- Maintain PPE in a clean and serviceable condition and request replacements when necessary.
- Comply with all isolation procedures in place.
- Carry out manual handling activities safely, in accordance with training and company procedures.
- Report accidents and near misses immediately and assist with investigations when required.
- Work in accordance with permits to work requirements.
- Work with the Senior Engineer and utilise the Engineering Skills Matrix to improve personal skills, adding value to both the role and the wider Engineering team.
(Under Supervision) Reactive Repair and Planned Maintenance
- Diagnose faults, and safely service, adjust, repair, and maintain mechanical and electrical equipment (where qualified) using the appropriate tools, in line with relevant food hygiene standards.
- Observe, inspect, and report on machinery and equipment, identifying defects, potential failures, and opportunities for performance or reliability improvements.
- Undertake any training provided by the company to further enhance skills and competence.
- Apply root cause analysis procedures to identify reasons for equipment failures.
- Update and maintain records in the Engineering database (CMS)
Additional Daily Tasks (when on site)
- Undertake daily ‘walk-rounds’, as directed by the line manager, including weekly utility meter readings.
- Maintain cleanliness, security and auditing of personal factory toolbox and its contents.
- Ensure housekeeping and cleanliness of engineering facilities, including workshops, stores, access areas, and toilets.
- Maintain security of premises, including unlocking and locking main access points as directed by line management.
- Carry out weekly fire alarm tests and accurately record results.
- Make full use of the department’s “walkie-talkies” to comply with Health & Safety requirements (e.g. isolated working), request assistance, report location, and improve response times to calls.
- Plan and co-ordinate personal holiday entitlement with team members and line management to minimise carry-over, avoid peak production times and prevent conflicts with holidays already booked by other team members.
General Duties
Undertake reasonable requests from line managers to assist in the manufacturing process.
Actively engage with management, peers, and staff from other departments to ensure efficient operations.
- Adopt and promote lean processes within the workplace to improve efficiency and reduce waste.
