Overview
The Trainee Foundation Operative Programme is designed to give individuals practical, hands-on experience working on essential infrastructure projects that support the power network. The role provides structured learning and development while working alongside experienced civils professionals.
This opportunity is ideal for college students or recently qualified civil trades/groundsmen who are motivated, hardworking, and interested in building a long-term career in specialist engineering
Successful candidates will gain valuable site experience, industry training, and the opportunity to develop the skills required to progress into skilled operative and supervisory roles within the business.
Role Responsibilities
As a Trainee Foundation Operative you will support experienced site teams in delivering civils works associated with power infrastructure projects.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting with civil engineering and foundation works on Power Grid Civils projects.
- Supporting the installation of general civils and associated infrastructure
- Learning how to safely use tools, equipment, and site machinery under supervision
- Assisting with site preparation, material handling, and groundwork activities
- Working closely with supervisors, engineers, and experienced operatives.
- Following company health, safety, and environmental procedures at all times
- Contributing positively to the site team being reliable and maintaining a strong work ethic.
Training & Development Pathway
The Trainee Foundation Operative Programme provides structured development to support long-term career progression within the company. Your line manager will hold 6 monthly touchpoints to monitor progress.
Year 1 – Introduction & Foundation Skills
- Introduction to the renewable and Overhead line sector
- Site safety and basic industry qualifications/competencies
- Assisting experienced operatives on active projects
- Learning the importance of setting levels via a dumpy level/laser level
- Learning the fundamentals of groundwork, excavation works, steel fixing, concreting & shuttering
Year 2 – Skills Development
- Increased involvement in civils operations
- Developing competence in groundwork techniques, steel fixing and concrete works
- Self-sufficient in aspects of the job such as sheeting or framing.
- Self-sufficient in using survey equipment
- Awareness of companies KPI records
- Growing confidence working as part of a site team
Year 3 – Competency & Progression
- Supporting key civils activities with increased responsibility
- Demonstrating strong understanding of health, safety, and quality standards
- Developing specialist skills within power grid infrastructure
- Self-sufficient in all aspects of Foundation works and knowing jow to set stubs via the total station.
- Progression towards Foundation Operative or Skilled Civils Operative roles

Pay: £24,500.00-£29,500.00 per year
