Overall Purpose of the Job:
The Electrical Apprentice will support qualified Electricians with the installation, setup, testing, and maintenance of electrical systems across multiple sites, including new offices, temporary site offices, and welfare facilities. The role includes learning and assisting with Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) to ensure electrical equipment is safe and compliant.
The apprenticeship combines hands-on experience with formal training, helping the apprentice progress toward becoming a fully qualified Electrician.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Supporting Office Setup & Multi-Site Installations
- Travel with Electricians to different sites to help install electrical systems for new offices and temporary setups.
- Assist with installing sockets, lighting, power distribution, and cable containment (trunking, tray, conduit).
- Help with setting up temporary electrical supplies for cabins, welfare units, and site offices.
- Support power connection for office equipment, IT systems, and small machinery under supervision.
- Carry tools, materials, and equipment needed by the on-site Electrician.
- Assist with cable pulling, preparing wiring routes, and basic terminations under supervision.
- Support installation of lighting systems, small power circuits, and simple control wiring.
Maintenance & Basic Repairs
- Help conduct routine maintenance such as replacing lamps, inspecting sockets, and assisting with small electrical repairs.
- Shadow senior electricians during fault-finding and repair tasks across office and site equipment.
- Assist in PAT testing of electrical tools, office equipment, and portable devices across various sites.
- Learn how to use PAT testing equipment safely and correctly.
- Help label tested appliances, record results, and update compliance logs.
- Support the identification and reporting of damaged or non-compliant equipment.
- Understand the basics of the IET Code of Practice for PAT Testing under supervision
- Observe and assist with fixed electrical installation testing and inspection.
- Learn how to use electrical testing instruments such as multimeters and insulation testers.
- Always follow safety rules, electrical regulations, and safe working practices.
Learning & Development
- Attend apprenticeship training and complete all coursework, assessments, and logbooks.
- Seek support and guidance from qualified electricians to build knowledge and skills.
- Show a proactive attitude toward learning and improving practical competence.
General Duties
- Help with stock organisation, workshop tasks, and maintaining a tidy working environment.
- Support site documentation including PAT logs, installation notes, and basic work records.
- Communicate effectively with colleagues, site teams, and supervisors
Qualification and Experience requirement:
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths, English, and Science (Grade 4/C or above preferred).
- Enrolment in, or eligibility for, a Level 3 Electrical Installation Apprenticeship.
- ECS or CSCS Apprentice Card (or willingness to obtain).
- Interest in electrical engineering or construction-based electrical work.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong willingness to learn electrical installation and testing practices, including PAT testing.
- Basic awareness of electrical tools and equipment (advantageous, not required).
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
- Safe working approach and attention to detail.
- Reliability, punctuality, and a positive attitude toward learning.
- Ability to follow instructions and gradually take on tasks as skills develop.
Willingness to travel between multiple sites as needed.
