As a Mechanic Apprentice, you will work under the supervision of the Assistant Manager, qualified mechanics, and instructors to learn and demonstrate knowledge and skills in vehicle maintenance. This includes diagnosing malfunctions, preventative maintenance, repair, and overhaul of various types of transit equipment in the maintenance shop and in the field. The Mechanic Apprentice program is governed by the Standards of Apprenticeship adopted by the Community Transit/IAM Apprenticeship Committee.
Essential Duties
Job Duties
- Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical defects in hybrid and diesel-powered buses and other heavy motorized mechanical equipment
- Operate and maintain electronic diagnostic and related equipment, including computer programs and scanning tools.
- Diagnose, dismantle, repair, and overhaul all types of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines, automatic transmissions, differentials, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic systems. Operation of vehicles is required.
- Perform wheel alignments, and adjust and repair brakes, pumps, starters, injectors, lights, steering gears, generators, and air conditioning systems.
- Install, maintain, and repair a variety of auxiliary systems, equipment, and electronics including fare collection, communication, and related components.
- Operate hydraulic lifts, hoists, jacks, cranes, diagnostic computers, and software.
- Document work done, material used, and how time is spent on appropriate forms.
- Perform general cleaning work in the garage and other related work as required.
- Assist in chaining vehicles.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED.
- Associate degree in Diesel Technology OR a Certificate of Competency/Proficiency in Diesel Technology with at least 76 credits from an accredited technical college or trade school within the last five years. A copy of your unofficial transcript is required with your application.
- Possession of a starter set of tools and a rolling toolbox at time of hire.
- Must possess by time of hire a valid Washington State Driver's license and a good driving record.
- Must possess or be able to obtain within 90 days of hire, a Class B Washington State Commercial Driver’s license with passenger and air-brake endorsements.
- Community Transit has a drug and alcohol-free workplace policy. This is a safety sensitive position and employment is contingent on passing a physical and substance abuse test.
- Must be able to work any shift assigned to meet the needs of the agency, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
An equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the job duties is also accepted.
Knowledge Requirements
- Demonstrated knowledge obtained through both written and practical application evaluations.
- Working knowledge of occupational hazards and precautions required in heavy equipment repair shops.

- One year experience in mechanical or diesel equipment preferred.
- Skilled at computer and computer software use preferred.
Working Conditions
Work is performed both in the shop and in the field. Duties require lifting, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects and equipment. Will require climbing, kneeling, reaching, and standing to access equipment and perform repairs. Repetitive motions with hand or power tools may also be required. Due to the nature of the duties, you may also be exposed to automotive fumes, odors, and dust, and may need to complete tasks in noisy environments and varying weather conditions.
Other: This position is considered safety-sensitive under the U.S. Department of Transportation and is subject to drug and alcohol testing under both DOT and Community Transit authority throughout the period of employment.
