Typical Requirements & Training
- Apprenticeship Structure: Usually a 3–4 year, Level 3 program combining workplace experience with block-release college training.
- Educational Requirements: Often requires GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths, with grades 4-9 (A-C), or equivalent.
- Skills: Ability to work in a team, good communication, willingness to learn new technologies, and attention to detail.
What You'll Learn
Apprentices will gain hands-on knowledge in:
- Advanced braking systems, fuel systems, and steering/suspension.
- Electrical systems and diagnostics.
- Workshop health and safety and environmental awareness.
- Maintain working area.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records and order parts.
Working towards Core Responsibilities & Duties
- Maintenance & Repair: Servicing and repairing HGVs and trailers, including engines, transmissions, braking systems, and air suspensions.
- Diagnostics: Using computer-aided diagnostic tools to identify faults in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Compliance & Safety: Performing safety inspections, preparing vehicles for MOT testing, and adhering to strict legal and Health & Safety regulations.
- Breakdown Assistance: Attending roadside breakdowns to conduct repairs.
- Administrative Tasks: Maintaining accurate maintenance records, service reports, and ordering parts.
