The Opportunity In our Software Development pathway, you'll help create secure, reliable and engaging experiences for customers and colleagues, powered by data. You could be part of a team developing, testing and releasing software that brings ideas to life, automating processes to make things faster and smarter, or working with data to uncover insights that drive better decisions.
You'll learn how technology shapes everything we do, gain hands-on experience with modern tools and practices, and work alongside experts who'll support you every step of the way. If you think logically, enjoy solving problems, are curious about how things work and have some coding knowledge, this could be the perfect place to grow your skills and make an impact.
These are permanent roles from day one. During your apprenticeship, you'll spend around 80% of your time gaining hands-on experience and 20% studying for your Apprenticeship qualifications. It's a chance to learn, grow and make an impact from the start.

The Roles There are
three role types on offer within our Software Development Pathway, based in Norwich: a buzzing place in which to launch your career. We champion hybrid working at Aviva (three days in the office and two days from home every week is typical), so you'll need to live within commuting distance of the office where your chosen role is based. You'll get the benefit of spending time with colleagues in real life as well as gaining more work-life balance.
Automation Engineer (Norwich): you'll work closely with teams across the business to understand challenges and turn ideas into practical solutions. By gathering requirements and using process automation, including low code and no code tools, you'll help improve how we work, save costs and deliver better outcomes for customers and colleagues. Working in small, collaborative teams, you'll build high quality solutions with the full support of our expert Technology community.
This
Level 6 Apprenticeship will see you gain a
BSc (Honours) in Digital and Technology Solutions upon successful completion of your studies (c40-48 months).
Software Engineer (Norwich): you'll help develop and release software that creates secure, reliable and engaging experiences for customers and colleagues. You'll work in small agile teams, maintain and enhance applications, and learn all about software engineering lifecycles and best practices. It's interesting, challenging work, and you'll have the full support of our expert technology community to help you grow.We have opportunities for Apprentice Software Engineers at different levels:
- Level 4 Apprenticeship - equivalent to the first year of an undergraduate degree or Higher National Certificate (HNC) (c19 months) AND
- Level 6 Apprenticeship -you'll work towards a BSc (Honours) in Digital and Technology Solutions upon successful completion of your studies (c40-48 months)
You'll be able to state your preference, if you have one, in your application.
Data Engineer (Norwich): you'll build tools and systems that turn raw data into meaningful insights. You'll create software that collects, organises and prepares data so teams can make smarter decisions and deliver brilliant experiences. Along the way, you'll learn to use a range of tools and programming languages, ensuring information is accurate, secure and accessible; all while growing your technical skills in a supportive environment.
This
Level 5 Data Engineer Apprenticeship is the equivalent of a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) and takes approx. 18 months to complete.

Additional Information What we're looking for For all roles in this pathway, having some coding experience and knowledge is really important - whether you've picked it up through your studies, online learning or teaching yourself.
For Level 4 or Level 5 apprenticeships:
- You'll need to have, or be on track for:
- at least three A-Levels at grades B, C, C or above (England) OR
- at least four Highers at grades B, B, B, C or above (Scotland) OR
- Level 3 equivalent qualifications
- Plus at least five GCSEs (or Scottish National 5s) at grades A*-C or 9-4 (or equivalent), including English and Maths
For Level 6 apprenticeships:
- You'll need to have, or be on track for:
- at least three A-Levels at grades B, C, C or above with two in STEM subjects (England) OR
- at least four Highers at grades B, B, B, C or above with two in STEM subjects (Scotland) OR
- Level 3 equivalent qualifications
- Plus at least five GCSEs (or Scottish National 5s) at grades A*-C or 9-4 (or equivalent), including English and Maths
To be eligible for an Apprenticeship, you will also need to:
- Have lived in the UK or European Economic Area (EEA) for at least 3 years by the start of the apprenticeship in September 2026
- be eligible to work full-time in the UK for the entire duration of the apprenticeship and beyond
- Intend to spend at least 50% of your working hours in England over the duration of the apprenticeship. For example, if you live in Wales and apply for a role based in Bristol, you will be required to work in England for at least half of your total working hours
- Be available for full-time work from September 2026 when all our apprentice roles start
